Canterbury SES was re-established in 1970 by Garry Hulme and 4 other members, who setup camp in a one bedroom; condemned flat situated at 161 Beamish Street Campsie. Garry Hulme was appointed as acting controller till 1973. During that time members lobbied for a vehicle through Canterbury City Council who supplied us with a second hand Holden Ute. Gary was appointed to permanent Local Controller in late 1973, to which he built and supported the unit through events such as the Granville rail disaster & Thredbo landslide. Gary sadly passed away in late 2009 & Deputy Controller Lenore Nelson was appointed acting controller of the unit until 2011 when her position was confirmed as the permanent Local Controller of the Canterbury SES.

With the ongoing support from Sydney Southern Region, SES State Headquarters, Canterbury Council, both Local and State Government & of course the unit members themselves - Canterbury SES has developed into a fully equipped organisation with 5 response vehicles & over 50 members.
